From September 19 to September 22, International Symposium Topical Problems of Nonlinear Wave Physics (NWP-2021) traditionally organized by IAP RAS was held in the Nizhny Novgorod Hotel "Oka". As part of the symposium, the "Nonlinear and Quantum Optics in Confined Systems" workshop was organized by the laboratory. Participants from 10 countries took part in the symposium, including recognized leaders in nonlinear and quantum photonics, fiber optics and laser-matter interaction: Robert Boyd, Gerd Leuchs, Philip Russell, etc. Leading scientist Gerd Leuchs gave a plenary talk in which he discussed the modern aspects of the generation and applications of quantum-squeezed light and presented the recent results of our laboratory on the generation of quantum- squeezed solitons in highly nonlinear fibers. Laboratory staff members presented their results in invited and regular oral talks.

We demonstrated for the first time single-mode Raman lasing in chalcogenide glass microspehere, tunable in the 1.610–1.663 µm range. Until now, Raman lasing in chalcogenide microcavities was observed only in the multimode regime without tuning. Also, for the first time a nonlinear four-wave mixing signal between the pump and Raman lines was recorded in chalcogenide microsphere.

Chalcogenide glasses are very attractive and promising materials for use in various photonic devices, including microresonators. Chalcogenide glasses have huge values of cubic Kerr and Raman nonlinearities, two-three orders of magnitude higher than the corresponding values for silica glass. Chalcogenide glasses are transparent in the mid-IR range, therefore they are actively used for operating in this spectral region.

Our set up for the study of laser and nonlinear effects in microresonators has been upgraded.  A monochromator and new high-sensitivity IR detectors were installed. We can now study the properties of microresonators outside the telecommunications range.

Gerd Leuchs presented a talk “Quantum Noise Reduction with High Photon Numbers” at the seminar at IAP RAS. The results obtained during the implementation of Megagrant project were presented, and further plans for  within the framework of the project related to the study of quantum noise in optical fibers were outlined.

The monitoring visit of the project curator Yulia Suntsova took place. A seminar was organized at which the leading scientist, supervisor of the laboratory Gerd Leuchs and the head of the laboratory Alexey Andrianov talked about the progress of the project. Other laboratory staff presented the results of their research in the form of reports. After that, topical issues on the implementation of the project, prospects for the development of the laboratory, problems and ways to overcome them were discussed with team members. Further, an examination of the laboratory premises was organized, a demonstration of the experimental stands created and carried out on them as part of the Megagrant was organized.

Evgeni Efimenko presented an invited talk "Towards Extreme States of Electron-Positron Pair Plasma Through QED Cascading" at the LPHYS'2019 International Laser Physics Symposium.

From June 28, 2019 to July 4, 2019, the international conference “Frontiers of Nonlinear Physics” FNP-2019 was held on board the ship "Konstantin Korotkov". The section "Nonlinearities in Quantum Systems and Quantum Optics", organized with the support of the Megagrant, was attended by 50 people from 10 countries. 9 members of the laboratory team took part in the conference and made 11 presentations. A lecture on ultimate focussing of light was delivered by Gerd Leuchs.

From 10.06.2019 to 06.23.2019, Professor Surinder Singh (Sant Longowal Institute of Engineering and Technology (SLIET), India) and Dilbag Singh Mehmi (Bhai Mani Singh Polytechnic College, India) visited IAP RAS and our laboratory. A seminar was organized with the participation of the Megagrant team, at which Surinder Singh presented the report “Design Aspect of Ultrahigh Speed ​​Optical Networks for Next Generation Communications System based on Mitigation and Utilization of Kerr Nonlinearities of Optical Amplifiers”. A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between IAP RAS and SLIET, in which the representatives of the IAP RAS are A. Andrianov, A. Kim, E. Anashkina.
